What makes the perfect picnic?
There are few things more relaxing than a nice picnic. It's a British tradition, with 70 per cent of us having picnics in the summer, and when the sun comes out you are almost guaranteed to see families sharing sandwiches together in one of the country's many green spaces.
It is no surprise, therefore, that July is National Picnic Month in the UK. Why not join the thousands of families in the capital and take some sandwiches to one of London's parks? They are so beautiful in the summer, it would be silly not to.
Of course, you'll want to make sure you get everything right. Nobody wants a disappointing picnic, after all. To celebrate National Picnic Month, we've put together a guide for to ensure you can make the most of the July weather and enjoy this British tradition.
So, what makes the perfect picnic?
First of all, you should make sure you pick the best spot for you and your family. Luckily, in London, you're spoiled for choice. The capital has plenty of green spaces you can enjoy, such as Kensington Gardens. Located just a short walk from our hotel, there is plenty to enjoy here - including the beautiful Italian Gardens, with its ornamental water feature - if you want to explore after you've eaten.
Primrose Hill is another great option. It's not as well-known as some of the other options, so expect a quieter park with a wonderful panoramic view of London for you to to take in while you enjoy your picnic. A visit here is a great way to get away from the busy city for a few hours.
You don't want to spend ages preparing a picnic only to have to put loads of work into washing up afterwards. It should be an easy, relaxing treat for you and your family, not a chore. Luckily, London is full of shops and delis that sell ready-made picnic hampers for you. The Mount Street Deli, for example, will prepare one if you book in advance; they are located the other side of Hyde Park from our hotel.
This way, you can turn your day into a relaxing, fuss-free experience. Simply pick up your picnic, eat in the sunshine on one of the fabulous parks, then return to a room at the Royal Garden Hotel that's ready and waiting for you.
Of course, you might not want a pre-made picnic; part of the fun is creating your family feast, after all. If that is the case, you need to make sure you're getting the best possible ingredients. For these, you should take a trip to one of London's many markets, such as Notting Hill Farmers' Market.
Open every morning, here you'll find everything from fruit and vegetables to freshly baked bread, cakes, cheese and even some homemade cider to pop in your picnic basket. Altogether, you will be able to get more than enough to feed your family at this market.
Only a few steps away and open every day of the week is Whole Foods Market. With three whole floors full of great food and wonderful ingredients, you're bound to find a delicious picnic treat here.
For something sweet after your picnic, why not head to Oddono's South Kensington? This parlour specialises in gelato and sorbet, and you'll have over 130 different flavours that you and your family can choose from.
Your picnic can be as fancy as you like, you can even push the boat out and pay top dollar for one from Fortnum and Mason, but it won't be special unless you're sharing it. A break in London is the perfect opportunity to spend some quality time with your loved ones, and why not do this with a picnic?
This is absolutely the most important part of a picnic: spending it with your loved ones. That's part of the reason why it makes such a perfect family day out. You can all experience the summer weather and the delicious food together, and spend some quality time with each other.
If you're stuck for an idea about what to do with the kids this summer, a picnic in London will be a treat they're bound to enjoy.
