West End Shows for all the family

Some of my fondest childhood memories visiting London include watching West End Shows with my parents, with Blood Brothers standing out as a favourite in my tweens. Here I share my hotlist of must-see West End shows on right now.

Lion King

Lyceum Theatre

An adaptation of Disney’s Academy Award®-winning animated feature film of 94, this moving, magical show will delight children and adults, of all ages. Opening on Broadway in 97 this emotional production has evolved going from strength to strength staying true to the heart of the film. The story follows hero Simba, a lion cub who must find out his identity and role within the circle of life, boldly confronting his past following the murder of his father Mufassa by his Uncle Scar. If there’s one show to book, please make it this one.

Apollo Victoria

Described as, One of the West End’s true modern classics by Metro, this multi-award winning show is the 17th longest running show in London’s theatrical history and will blow you away. A modern classic, this emotive production focuses on the untold story of the Wicked Witch, Elphaba, in The Wizard of Oz asserting that she is in fact a heroine, an outsider smeared by the Wizard’s dictatorship who is the ‘good one’ over Glinda, the Good Witch of the South. Prepare to be amazed.

Wicked is suitable for a general audience. As a guide to parents and guardians, it is recommended for ages 7+

Cambridge Theatre

Roald Dahl’s classic story Matilda, comes alive on stage in a show that The Observer describes as, ‘..Anarchically joyous, gleefully nasty and ingenious..’.  The story of genius child, Matilda will move you as she battles to overcome the the world’s worst parents and the most vile of head teachers in history, to help restore balance and happiness in her world.  An edge of your seat, emotive and utterly hilarious show, you’ll want to watch this again and again.

Prince Edward Theatre

A spectacle of a show bursting with lavish costumes and brilliant special effects, Disney’s Aladdin is a firm family-favourite featuring much-loved songs from the movie’s score including ‘Friend Like Me’, ‘A Whole New World’ and ‘Arabian Nights’ that will make you want to get up and dance in the aisle. The story follows a street urchin who falls for a beautiful princess so uses the power of a genie’s magic to become a prince in order to marry her. A sweet, romantic story, this will warm your heart and have you singing for days later.

School of Rock

New London Theatre

This musical, based on hit film of the same name has been described as, ‘The most enjoyable few hours money can buy’ by The Daily Telegraph. Charting the story of Dewey Finn, a failed wannabee rock star who takes on a job as a supply teacher in a prep school turning his staight A class to a wild rock band is brilliant entertainment. Watch in awe as he tries to get the kids to the Battle of the Bands without their parents and headteacher knowing. Funny, fun and a delight to watch with truly belting tunes.
