Swimming in the Serpentine: Fun for all the family

Located in Hyde Park, the Serpentine Lido is open to the public from May to September (though in May it is only open on weekends and Bank Holidays) and is a fantastic place for safe swimming. It's also very spacious, offering a 30 metre x 100 metre swimming area. Being a lake it is chlorine-free, but don't worry, as the water is tested weekly to check both safety and quality.

Of course, the novelty of being able to take a dip in a lake, where you are likely to be sharing the water with ducks and swans, is a big part of its appeal. However, families will probably be glad to hear that there is a dedicated family area, which is gated and has its own chlorinated paddling pool and play area. Absolutely perfect if you have younger children, this spot has plenty to keep little ones occupied while mums and dads relax.

The Lido is open seven days a week from 1 June to 12 September, from 10am to 6pm. Adult tickets are £4.60, £1.60 for children and £3.60 for concessions, though these all reduce by 50p after 4pm. Whenever you decide to visit, it's important to remember that there must be two adults to every one child under 16.

There is also a sun terrace and a kiosk selling hot and cold drinks and other refreshments, making this the perfect place to unwind as a family.

Getting to the Serpentine from the Royal Garden Hotel is easy. Simply take a leisurely stroll through Hyde Park or take the number 10 bus from directly outside the hotel to Marble Arch.
