Honest Mum's Favourite Christmas Activities in London

Christmas in London is simply magical. The city transforms into a twinkling haven for families, young and old, with lots to see and do, be it shopping, theatre or Christmas markets.

Christmas Lights

Watch the lights being switched on in London to mark the beginning of the season. Oxford Street’s ceremonial switching on of the Christmas lights is always a big draw for crowds, making for a festive spectacle year after year. In 2017 this iconic street will feature 1,778 snowflake decorations that will dazzle the streets until January. Carnaby Street, close by, will also light up the area and most shops on the street will also offer a 20% discount to get you into the festive spirit!

Christmas Markets

Winter Wonderland is a stand-out favourite with families, offering the bright lights of funfair rides with delicious treats, festive ornaments and gifts galore you can pop under the tree. Christmas By The River at London Bridge City has 68 independent stalls also featuring a unique pop-up bar where you can enjoy festive cocktails and craft beers. The Southbank Centre Winter Festival offers pop ups, activities and food for all the family, so make sure you check it out.

The Gruffalo’s Child at the Lyric Theatre and The Snowman at The Peacock Theatre will delight fans of the much loved books/tv film respectively, enchanting young and old audience members alike.

Matthew Bourne’s Cinderella at Sadler’s Wells reimagines the classic story of Cinderella as Cinders and an RAF pilot fall in love before being separated by the Blitz.  Under 5s are not admitted.

A Christmas Carol at the Old Vic Theatre sees Welsh actor Rhys Ifans become Ebenezer Scrooge in the unmissable classic.

Get Your Skates On

The Natural History Museum Ice Rink and Skate at Somerset House offer stunning rinks set among exquisite backdrops in London. Whether you’re a skating pro or a total amateur, go have some wintery fun with the family. Hotel Chocolat will be serving refreshments at the Natural History Museum this year and there will be champagne and tasty treats on offer at Somerset House.
