Fun with Kids on a Weekend (Off the Beaten Track)

As part of my ongoing insider’s guide to London for The Royal Garden Hotel, I’m sharing my top things to do with kids on weekend that are off the beaten track: the hidden gems and quirky activities that may not crop up in the guide books but will make your trip one to remember.

Bach to Baby (various locations)

Inspire your own mini-Mozart with a family trip to a Bach to Baby concert. Founded by the international performing pianist Miaomiao Yu, the concerts take place across London (in locations such as Covent Garden, Notting Hill and Putney).

Bach to Baby sees talented classical musicians play a selection of themed music on their instrument of choice, keeping each song short to maintain the attention span of its pint-sized audience members.  Afterwards, mammas, pappas and babbas can get involved in the nursery rhyme sing-a-long.

Clip N Climb

It’s a well known fact that kids can send us parents up the wall. But vice versa? Well that’s exactly what happens at the Clip n Climb, a kid-friendly climbing-centre in Chelsea.

Aimed at children aged 4+, Clip n Climb is guaranteed fun with adventurous and most importantly safe climbing challenges that will keep your kids entertained for hours. And fear not, as there’s also plenty for parents to do too, with adult climbing walls and a cafe for that much needed coffee break.

Mini-Rumpus: Under The Sea Party

Pioneers of immersive events, Rumpus, have launched a child-focus version of their parties, for kids. The next event takes place on March 5th and in the words of the Rumpus party-starters, it is a ‘non-stop, over-the-top animalistic, carnivalistic party extravaganza for Under 11’s and their adults’.

Expect dance floor shenanigans and mischief as the whole  family embark on a magical undersea adventure. Fancy dress and a wild imagination are essential!

Belsize Park Observatory

Spend an evening gazing at the stars with a trip to the Belsize Park Observatory. This lesser known observatory is open to the general public and has a extra powerful telescope that will take the whole families on an intergalactic adventure to planets and galaxies far far away.

The observatory is open at night during the autumn and winter months and is open during the day all year long to observe the sun.

ClueQuest

Fun the whole family, ClueQuest is Crystal Maze-esque escape game which will see you up against the clock in a bid to escape each room by solving a series of tough-to-crack puzzles.

Each fast-paced and fun-filled puzzle will see you unleash your inner Secret Service Agent to save the world from villains before the 60 minutes is up!

Hampstead Heath Ponds

Head to one of Hampstead Heath’s swimming ponds for a perfect summer afternoon surrounded by nature. There are four ponds in total, a women’s only, men’s only, mixed and a parliamentary lido and they are the country’s only ponds to be open to the public everyday of the year and to be manned by a lifeguard.

Children aged eight to 15 must be accompanied by an adult and be able to swim.

Comedy Club 4 Kids

Your little ones with laugh their tiny socks off at London’s fabled Comedy Club 4 Kids. Featuring big names in comedy such as Joe Lycett, CBBC’s Ed Petrie, Rob Delaney and Phil Jupitus to name just a few, each session serves up belly-busting laughs that both kids and parents will enjoy!

Each session is compéred by MC Tiernan Douieb and features regular sets from the super talented Comedy Academy kids. The shows take place in various locations around London.
