ADMIT TWO: OPEN AIR CINEMAS IN LONDON
London in the summer offers the opportunity for something a little different when it comes to date night. Going to the cinema is a classic couples’ activity, but doing it under the stars instead of inside adds an extra element of romance. With a wide selection of open air cinemas to choose from, you and your significant other will be spoiled for choice.
Right on our doorstep in Kensington Gardens from the 8 - 11 August is Luna Cinema. Pack a picnic and a blanket and sit beneath the stars with your choice of Bridget Jones' Dairy, The Goonies and Moulin Rouge. There is even the chance to get a VIP seat for the screening of Jaws at Brockwell Lido, which means lounging in a dinghy in the pool for the duration of the film. Alternatively, book a backrest and blanket for you and your other half and look forward to wood-fired pizza as your cinema snack.
The Nomad Cinema
With a name like Nomad, it’s unsurprising that this pop-up cinema doesn’t stay in the same place all the time. Its venues are as diverse as Grosvenor Square, Carpenter’s Road Lock and Brompton Cemetery, which complement the film being shown. Add quality catering from its carefully chosen partners and a goody bag to ramp up the fun and you will have a flavour of what Nomad Cinema is all about.
Rooftop Cinema Club
Not only does the Rooftop Cinema Club let you watch films from the top of some of London’s most impressive gardens, you can do it in comfort and style. That means a perfectly reclined deckchair and wireless headphones to drown out any unwanted background noise. Each movie starts at sunset and when you’re on the roof of the Bussey Building or surrounded by luscious planting at the Roof Gardens in Kensington, you have a front row seat for nature’s most beautiful show.
Film4 Summer Screen at Somerset House
Somerset House is an incredibly opulent backdrop for watching a film and when it’s coupled with the biggest outdoor screen in London, you know you are onto a winner. Whether you and your loved one enjoy classics like Philadelphia Story and Cruel Intentions or are keen to catch the UK premiere of Patti Cake$, you will find a varied selection on offer. Each viewing is preceded with a film-inspired DJ set and you can really make a night of it with food from a carefully selected group of vendors.
Pop Up Screens
The great thing about Pop Up Screens is that its inflatable screen can be taken just about anywhere, transforming parks across London into outdoor cinemas. You can kick back and watch old favourites or indulge in films you might have missed the first time round. Nothing says summer love like Dirty Dancing or Grease, while Ghostbusters and The Big Lebowski are definite crowd pleasers.
